Legend of Amabie

In 1846, a government official went to investigate stories of a mysterious light in the waters off of Higo Province, Japan. Standing on the shore, he stared at the light as it grew brighter.  A glowing-green creature emerged from the sea with fishy scales, long hair, three fin-like legs and a beak. Amabie introduced itself to the official and predicted a pandemic would soon ravage the country. However, the mysterious merperson said, “Tell the people to draw images of me and the disease will disappear followed by a rich harvest lasting six years.” Today in 2020, people all over the world are drawing Amabie to end this pandemic.

Brenda drew this Amabie for you, with help from designer Andi Fong. Please draw your own Amabie. Together we will help usher in a time of peace and prosperity.

Amabie has been sighted throughout history in Japan. In 1844, in Niigata Prefecture, 1846 – 1848 during the influenza pandemic, and several sightings when Japan suffered severe illnesses from foreign contact after opening up to the West post-Edo period.

Amabie instructions are for us to draw its images. Since most of us have not seen this magical merperson, we have to use our imagination. Each Amabie we draw,  will be as unique as the person who drew it. That’s the miracle of the legend - we may be different from one another but we all want health and happiness.

This is the power of art - to manifest the Invisible. To show us that together, we have the power to transform our future.
